The fabric is exquisite, the pattern dances as it catches the light, it has a captivating beauty appearing virtually as bright and fresh as it would have over 170 years ago. A lavish row of Silk taffeta bows embellish the centre front of the corseted bodice. Further ornamentation in the form of delicate silk passementerie fringing is applied in chevrons at the cuff and following the sharp V front of the bodice. A small handwritten piece of paper attached to the skirt records it as a wedding dress date 1840, the other information is difficult to decipher. There is a bias cut and joined length of same silk fabric which measures 170 inches long by 3.5 inches deep. Another joined length measures 82 inches by 3.5 inches. (shown as one a roll in my photographs). The part made skirt is comprised of seven full widths of stunning floral silk damask selvedge to selvedge each panel is approximately 19 inches wide. These panels would have most probably been cartridge pleated into the waistband which would allow this large amount of fabric to be condensed to a small waist.
The top and bottom of the skirt panels have been part finished, neatened and backed/lined with a fine ivory chintz? There is an opening at the. Centre back /placket and another smaller one in preparation for what might have been an intended pocket along one seam. The skirt measures 40.5 inches long. The ensemble could of course be completed, with the opportunity to alter the bodice if it proved too small by using a panel from the skirt? The item "EXQUISITE ANTIQUE WEDDING GOWN 1840'S VICTORIAN DRESS MAUVE SILK DAMASK & BOWS" is in sale since Monday, February 11, 2019.
