Vintage Bespoke Handmade Patent Opera Bow Pumps. These are a vintage pair of full bespoke patent leather opera pumps. Made around the late 1970s. The patent leather used is the original old school patent, not like todays modern high shine plastic look.
The usual process for making black calf shoe leather is used, from there, the tanner carefully coated the leather with a varnish imbued with dyes and other ingredients. A patent in 1854 described the varnish ingredients as oil, amber, Prussian blue, litharge, white lead, ochre, whiting, asphalt, and sometimes copal.
In practice, many tanners kept their varnish recipe secret, and even the ingredients listed in patent applications may have been falsified in order to throw off competitors!! Tanning is done in the usual way often with cheaper leathers, it is in the final finishing stage, when it is coated with a plastic lacquer to give it its characteristic glossiness. For sizing see last picture, measured up against a modern UK made slipper, which is a size 10 E. USA size 10.5 D. But in very good condition. You can see that the uppers have some wear but the soles still look new. The original distinguished owner of these pumps was obviously used to being driven to his evening events. The soles look as though they have only been worn indoors. Please feel free to ask questions.
